Its a Tuff Business

Hi , I would like to give you my opinion of this discussion . I'm a 20 year veteran of the hair dressing industry ! I have owned salons in the past and worked for many . Today's hair designing industry has taken a 360 from what it was when I first started in the business in the 80's -- Vidal Sassoon was hot -- GQ hair cuts were all the rage for men - the BUZZ cut was a no no and frowned upon by most people . Today the 35 dollar mans hair cut has flown the coop replaced by 6 to 8 dollar buzz cuts . This scenario has been caused I feel by the change in economy and the economy does have influence in our style, and the fact that the US is at war . For instants, the BUZZ cut is now a popular IN STYLE cut for men ,where as in the 80's you would have been frowned upon and called a jar head ( sorry, just a figure of speech , I support our military !) by your pears for wearing that style. Today its cool to where a military type cut because of the fact that we are at war, and its cool to be a marine ( or a member of any other military service ).

So, I feel that unfortunately right now its a hard business to be in, but , we have been here before ( before Sassoon brought professional hairdressing to the US ) there were mostly only barber shops to go to for your hair , even the woman had to go to the barber . So, theoretically things should return to the days of high style - high priced hair dressing and the hair dresser/cosmetologist will once again be looked up to .

Everything in this universe rotates including style :)

What goes around will come around again , usually with a slightly different twist to it .

CHANGING TIMES

My overall look at the hair dressing industry at this time .

There was a time when a hair designer could make a six figure income . These days the average designer is lucky to be making 20 bucks an hour ( with there tips ) and allot are making less than that .

What caused this huge change ?

The change was solely caused by the emergence of quick no appointment type shops like SUPERCUTS - FANTASTIC SAMS -

COST CUTTERS - HAIR CUT STORE

( I use the phrase SHOPS because these types of hair businesses are not salons , they normally don't offer nails , message , facials , etc )

they are low budget businesses set up for the middle to lower class public or the guy that just isn't as concerned about his hair style .

This type of change to business approach is also apparent in just about every business segment in the US . Quality of product and the pampering of customers is being thrown to the wayside and being replaced by huge businesses run by one guy at the top sucking up all the money wall everyone else eats beans for breakfast lunch and dinner ( that's if they can afford dinner ) . There formula for success is getting rid of all the competition by low prices and in hens becoming the only one selling the product so the you ( the consumer ) is forced to buy from them .

The US is seemingly / silently turning socialistic .

what's next ? communism ? I thought that's what they were telling us we didn't want ? LOL ------ I'm confused .

two sites intertwined technologies

We have recently acquired the URL advancedhairdesign.com
together with our web site www.advancedhairdesign.net we will bring you not only hair styling related information on the .net version but will now offer information and links pertaining to the world of hair transplants - hair transplantation - etc .
The advanced hair design.net web site has been around since 2002 and we are happy to have recently acquired the .com version which will be dedicated to the world of hair transplantation .
We started noticing quite a while back that people typing in the key words ( advanced hair design ) into there search engines were not only looking for hair styling information , but were also interested in information on gaining hair they didn't have through hair transplanting methods . When we recently acquired the URL www.advancedhairdesign.com we decided to focus that site on the new modern types of hair transplantation .
In the old days hair transplants were extremely detectable . Most the time if you got within three to four feet of a person with the old style ( plugs ) methods of hair transplanting surgery you would see the plugs in the front of the hairline resembling a doll head .
As a hair stylist that has seen the current methods of hair transplantation I can tell you first hand that this has all changed . I have been in the middle of a hair cut and have had clients that have had these new procedures done tell me that their hair is a transplant and I did not detect it even when cutting their hair .
The days of the doll head plugs are gone . Today's hair transplantation is truly virtually undetectable .

Hair dressing industry badly hurt by economy

Well gang the reports are in for 2008 . It seems the entire hair dressing industry is off on service sales by about 35 % , and product sales is even worse at 42 % off for the last two months of 2008 . This is a huge burden for us as cosmetologists to bare . When you are use to making a fairly decent living and then all of a sudden your making close to minimum wage , IT HURTS . My sympathies are with all of you as I know personally as a licensed California hairdresser that these are tuff times and they don't seem to be getting any better .
In times like these we must figure out different approaches to our business .
I personally am doing much more bartering for my services right now then ever before . A hair cut for a massage , or a hair coloring for a teeth cleaning . There are lots of things we can trade our services for,its always good to ask someone if there interested in bartering for your services if you want what they have to offer .I just did a hair coloring on my landlords wife for partial rent !
all we can do is tuff it out . My advice ? pull up a chair , crack open a brew , were going to be here for a while .

become your customers best friend

In order to build a clientele in any salon under any set up ( weather it be commission based or booth rental ) you must try hard to pay attention to your customers needs . There most important need is a GREAT hair style from you . To obtain GREAT results you must first be able to interpret what there needs are through a consultation . I CANT STRESS ENOUGH HOW IMPORTANT THE CONSULTATION IS IN THE OUTCOME OF THERE STYLE . Secondly you must be able to visualize there needs from the consultation and create it using your advanced hair designing techniques . Thirdly and just as important as the former , you must make a connection with your client . This means you need to somehow set yourself apart from just another hair dresser that doesn't feel like talking to or getting to know the client that is sitting in your chair . If you can give them the best style of there life ( or close to it ! ) and create a social connection with your client you will make them feel ( AND KNOW ) that you are sincere about them , you don't take them for granted , and you look foreword to them coming in. YOU WILL BUILD A HUGE CLIENTELE BASE THAT WILL MAKE YOU LOTSA $$$$$$$

BEAUTY AND THE ECONOMY

CURRENT WORLD ECONOMY SLUMPS HAVE HIT ALLOT OF DIFFERENT SEGMENTS OF OUR BUSINESS STRUCTURE INCLUDING THE BEAUTY INDUSTRY .

The beauty industry as a whole is probably off by close to half of its normal projected earnings for this time of the year .

People just arnt spending the money on their hair the way they used to . They seem to be putting off the cuts longer then usual and definitely cutting back on the expensive color.

The general feeling to me is that people are paying for mortgages , credit cards , car payments , and food only right now . And , as we know allot of folks are not even able do that .

The things we can really do without arnt getting much business , like the beauty business , restaurant , retail , service , transportation , virtually everything is off to a certain degree .

Unfortunately this spending trend is expected to continue for some time , putting pressure on allot of small businesses which make up the core infrastructure of the beauty industry .
